Microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration and reversed osmosis are pressure driven processes. By applying pressure the water flows through the membrane and components with a certain size are retained. The figure shows the size of components passing each type of membrane.

The pressure driven membrane processes are also used in Forward Osmosis applications, where they are used for Draw Solution Recovery. The picture shows a pilot of BLUE-tec, in which RO and MD can be applied after FO.

Membrane contact processes

In membrane contact processes a concentration difference is applied over the membrane instead of a difference in mechanical pressure. These concentration differences can lead to a difference in osmotic pressure as in Forward Osmosis or a difference in vapor pressure as in Ammonia Membrane Stripping or Membrane Distillation. These new ways of membrane filtration opens new possibillities of selective concentration of fluids. These are our technologies:

Membrane bioreactor (MBR)

Membrane bioreactors are used in wastewater treatment. In a membrane bioreactor the final settler is replace by a membrane systems, resulting in a compact and highly efficient biological treatment system. Membrane bioreactors are used in industrial and municipal wastewater streams and manure treatment.

Complementary technologies

BLUE-tec has knowledge of several complementary technologies. These technologies are applied in several projects and can be distinguished in several fields.

  • Pre-treatment technologies like sieves, screens, sand filters, flotation, etc.
  • Post treatment technologies like activated carbon filtration, disinfection,
  • Dewatering technologies like centrifuges, belt presses, evaporators and crystallizers
