Plastics
Plastic is a material with many different and very practical properties; it is light, strong, malleable, colourful and keeps food longer. There are many different types of plastics, making it difficult to sort and then recycle.
Challenges of plastic recycling
Most plastics are theoretically recyclable, by melting them down into a granulate, which can be used to produce new products.
Before granules can be produced, the plastic has to be washed. Because the plastic to be recycled is used for many different purposes, the contamination of the plastic is also very diverse. The water will contain suspended, emulsified and dissolved contaminants.
Different washing water cleaning techniques
During the plastic washing process, large amounts of washing water are recycled. Various cleaning techniques are used in this recycling loop. Filtration, sedimentation and chemical/physical flotation technique.
To prevent the build-up of dissolved substances, part of the recycling stream has to be refreshed, resulting in a contaminated stream to be discharged. This water stream can also be cleaned using biological treatment and membrane systems.
