As the wastewater reaches the tertiary treatment stage, it still has residual suspended matter and fine particulates. Further, it has a relatively high level of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus and has microbes and odour in it. During tertiary treatment process, different methods are used to remove all these contaminants and properties from wastewater.
The objective of tertiary treatment is to remove nitrogen, phosphorus, additional suspended solids, refractory organics, heavy metals and dissolved solids. Tertiary treatment adds a third, more advanced and rigorous level of treatment. Primary and secondary treatment typically get wastewater only clean enough to discharge safely into the environment. Tertiary treatment, on the other hand, can achieve levels of water purification that make the water safe for reuse in water-intensive processes or even as drinking water. Many municipalities have specific requirements about the discharge of treated water, and tertiary treatment should be sufficient to meet those standards, keep the environment clean, and preserve human health.
With an effluent polishing system, water from a water treatment plant, can be brought to a very high water quality, by removing specific remaining pollutants or substances from the water flow. The outcome can be process water quality or even potable water.
