After tertiary treatment the wastewater contains significant quantities of bacteria, protozoa and other microorganisms.
The aim of the quaternary treatment is to decrease the dissemination of the emergent pollutants (antibiotics, pesticides, hormones, drugs, micro plastics) whose presence in surface waters increases regularly, involving problems for the human health and the biodiversity of the aquatic environments.
