It is 1984. Somewhere in an outlying area of the Netherlands, a man has an idea to start a business. Gertie van den Hurk is bursting with energy and decisiveness and wants to use his technical knowledge to build a livelihood and to make the world a little better.
Gertie: "When I started the first year, I did everything on my own. At one point I found out that I had earned 2 guilders and 50 cents per hour. I worked 25 hours extra every week, then at another job. Everyone laughed at me. I did everything alone ". Van den Hurk quickly realised that you also need others to achieve something.
"Therefore, in the second year, I decided not to do everything myself anymore. I first hired workers for 10 hours, then 20, I engineered and they did it. The drawing boards were in the bedroom. My wife did the accounting and kept it in a cupboard. "
The company is growing more and more over the years. Not only more staff, but also the three children of Van den Hurk have come to work in the company over the years, each with their own specialism. Colubris is now a global player in the field of wastewater treatment, waste recycling and bioresource solutions. But it remains a family business, where we continue to realise that we can never do it alone.
The employees have been the backbone of the family from the start. The greatest strength is in the people around us.
Gertie van den Hurk
The slogan of Colubris is: Let's close the loop together!
Let's create the circle. We want to make the world a better place by purifying water and re-using residual waste, so that in the future we can enjoy a balanced environment.
The circle is now closed in another way. In 2018, almost 35 years after the company was founded, Van den Hurk decided that it is time for a new generation. Van den Hurk recently reached the age of 65 and thinks it's time for a new generation of leaders, so that accumulated knowledge and passionate young people with new insights can complement each other.
As entrepreneur and owner, he will keep himself busy with the growth of the company. His children grew up with Colubris. They continue to uphold the honour of the family in different roles.
A new CEO
After a long search Colubris found in Frank Tillmann the experienced man who will take on the role of daily management. On 1 September 2018, Frank Tillmann will become the new general manager / CEO. Tillmann:
We have found each other in vision and equal views. We will also seek cooperation with external parties that can strengthen us. Cooperation and continuity are crucial.
The circle is complete, and there is never an end to it. Let's close the loop together.
